Destin, Fla., May 28 – On Tuesday, May 27, the Destin Forward Class of 2025 held a ribbon cutting celebrating the completion of its class project, an interactive audio trail at Captain Leonard Destin Park. Five stories narrated by Destin City Councilor Dewey Destin describe events in Captain Leonard Destin's life, as well as the history of the East Pass. Park guests can scan QR codes on plaques throughout the park to access the stories.
According to CityOfDestin.com, Captain Leonard Destin Park, located at 101 Calhoun Avenue, includes an accessible beach area, boardwalk, playground, bathrooms, a splash pad, pavilions, dock, and paddle board/kayak launch. The park is also home to a heron rookery along with educational signage highlighting more than 150 years of history and natural features of the park.
This is the 16th Destin Forward class to complete a project that creates a lasting impact on the city. Past projects include the restoration of an old pilot house for the Destin History & Fishing Museum, a memorial to Captain Leonard Destin on the Destin Harbor Boardwalk, a plaque recognizing Destin's first official post office and providing the history of the US Postal Service in the area, donation of a boat to the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, monofilament recycling posts along the Destin Harbor Boardwalk, restoration of an 80-year-old seine boat called the Primrose for the Destin History & Fishing Museum, and more.
