Okaloosa County Public Library Cooperative Helps Over 50 Adults Earn High School Diplomas

The Okaloosa County Public Library Cooperative (OCPLC) is proud to announce the successful graduation of 52 students from the Career Online High School program over a five-year period. The program seeks to help adults achieve their high school diploma despite many obstacles they have encountered in their lives. Individuals who participate in Career Online High School are stay-at-home moms, working parents and business owners with dreams of bettering their life through education. Their high school education was interrupted by a variety of reasons such as the need to financially support their families, homelessness, pregnancy, the COVID-19 pandemic or challenging home environments.

“I am proud of the lives that have been touched by this program over the years,” said Okaloosa County Board Chairman Paul Mixon. “Their successes in overcoming their individual hardships will contribute to building a better community and I look forward to seeing more adults utilize this valuable asset. I am proud of this year’s class of graduates and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”

The Class of 2024 includes nine individuals ranging in age from their 20s to their 50’s. They will be recognized at a graduation ceremony to be held on Oct. 5, 2024 at 2 p.m. at the Niceville Community Center located at 204-C Partin Drive in Niceville, Florida. The public and media is welcome to attend.

“Public libraries facilitate lifelong learning for people of all ages at the different stages of their lives,” said Vicky Stever, Coordinator of the OCPLC. “We give people the tools to help them achieve their goals. Administering tuition scholarships and supporting adult students as they complete their diplomas is one of the most joyous and impactful services we offer.”

Those who attend Career Online High School return to finish their high school diploma for job readiness, career advancement and college admission. Students take classes online with the flexibility of 24/7 access and get support from certified instructors and academic coaches leading to an accredited high school diploma or career certificate.
